Speech of the Minister of Foreign Affairs

Statement by H.E. R.M. Marty M. Natalegawa at the Annual Coordination Meeting of the OIC Foreign Ministers New York, 24 September 2010

Friday, 24 September 2010

Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim;

Assalamu’alaikum wa-Rahmatullahi wa-Barakatuh

Let me begin by extending our felicitations to you, Y.E. Hamrokhon Zarifi, on your election as chairman of this meeting.

Mr. Chairman,

Thank You for your important statement this morning. We appreciate very much to the valuable remarks by our Secretary General. Let me also take this opportunity to reiterate the sympathy, condolences and full support of the Government and the people of Indonesia to the Government and people of Pakistan in the aftermath of recent destructive flood.

Mr. Chairman,

The agenda we have jus adopted this morning reflects well the comprehensive nature of our organizations concern and engagement. Mindful of the constraint of time, as well as given that Indonesia’s view on those issues have regularly been expressed, I should like to avail the present august occasions to make 2 (two) basic points.

First, our annual coordination meeting here at the sideline of the UNGA must contribute to the sharpening of our coordination on the multitude of the issues that are before the UNGA on which on almost all the OIC members has a common view.

None, more so, than on the issue closest to us all that is the question of Palestine. Needless to say, we are all united behind the Palestinian cause. And  that we are only to aware of the critical juncture we are at, in the recently re-launched direct talks due to the uncertainty over the extension of the moratorium on Israel’s illegal settlement activities. Whatever the outcome, we, the OIC member states, must be ready to communicate, to coordinate and to all on concert here in the UN, in support of Palestine in facing all the various dimensions of its struggle.

Mr. Chairman,

Coordination among us, of course must extend to other issues before the UNGA, not least on the social development, political and security agenda. Not least, we must speak as one with clarity and imbued with strong principle in rejecting all forms and manifestations of Islamophobia of religious intolerance.

In this regard, let us work closely together and, most important, build bridges of understanding beyond our organizations.

Secondly, Mr. Chairman, we must avail of the present opportunity to inject fresh momentum to our collective efforts in reforming and revitalizing our organization. Only in this way, can we ensure that we are more effective in addressing global issue here before the UN and beyond.

For example, the promotion and protection of Human Rights, the ensuring food security and attainment of the MDG’s goals in general and also promotion of South-South Cooperation. All based on our values and principles.

In short, we believe, Mr, Chairman, that if our deliberation here today lead to enhance coordination between OIC member states at the present session of the UNGA; and inject fresh momentum to our reform efforts then it would have served valuables purpose.

Thank You Mr. Chairman

Wassalamu’alaikum wa-Rahmatullahi wa-Barakatuh
