Sukan Borneo Tournaments & Governor of East Kalimantan Visit to Brunei Darussalam

The 3rd Borneo Games  held on 29 November – 6 December 2009 and participated by contingents of athletes from East Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan (Indonesia), Labuan, Sabah and Sarawak (Malaysia) and Brunei Darussalam, as well as the Malaysian peninsular state of Melacca, which specially invited by the Government of Brunei Darussalam.
 
The 3rd Borneo Games showcased tournaments of nine branches of sports, which included badminton, gasing game, lawn tennis, sepak takraw (takraw ball game), lawn ball, cue-sports (billiard, snooker, 8-ball & 9-ball), athletics, pencak silat traditional martial arts and lawn hockey. East Kalimantan achieved the 4th position with 146 medals after Sabah on the top position (248 medals), followed by Sarawak (243 medals) and Brunei Darussalam (194 medals)
 
The Borneo Games is held every two years since held in Sabah in 2005. The 4th Borneo Games,  will be held in Samarinda, East Kalimantan in 2011. In the closing ceremony of the 3rd Borneo Games at the Stadium of Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah in Bandar Seri Begawan, Governor of East Kalimantan, Awang Faroek Ishak symbolically received the handover of the hosting of the Borneo Games from Brunei Darussalam.
 
After having attended the closing ceremony of the 3rd Borneo Games, on 7 December 2009 Governor Awang Faroek Ishak also paid courtesy call to the Acting Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports of Brunei Darussalam, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dewa Major-General (Ret’d) Dato Seri Pahlawan Hj Awang Mohammad bin Hj Daud. On the same day, the Governor also paid a visit to the Second Minister of Finance of Brunei Darussalam, Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Dato Paduka Hj Awang Abdul Rahman bin Hj Ibrahim.
 
 On 8 December 2009, the Governor was received by the Minister of Industry and Primary Resources of Brunei Darussalam, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Paduka Hj Awang Yahya bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar. The Governor, accompanied by the Secretary of the Provincial Government of East Kalimantan and several Directors at the provincial government, had a meeting with the President of the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) of Brunei Darussalam, Hj Mohammad Razali bin Hj Johari, and his Executive Board members.
 
The purpose of the meeting was to explain on the potentials of the East Kalimantan province and seek the possibilities to establish cooperation in the areas of economics, trade, investment, mining, agriculture, animal husbandry, fisheries and tourism between East Kalimantan and Brunei Darussalam. The Governor of East Kalimantan also expressed his province’s interest to participate at the travel mart which will be held in conjunction with the ASEAN Tourism Forum in Brunei Darussalam which will be held later in the third week of January 2010.
 
The Provincial Government of East Kalimantan, with the cooperation of the Indonesian Embassy in Bandar Seri Begawan, held a dinner at the Rizqun International Hotel, Bandar Seri Begawan on 8 December 2009 and invited Brunei Government officials and businessmen as well as leading figures in the Indonesian community in Brunei Darussalam.
 
The popular Malay Indonesian singer, Iyet Bustami, spiced up the evening. The guest of honour was the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports of Brunei Darussalam, Dato Paduka Hj Jemat bin Hj Ampal.
