The fashion show by the famous Indonesian fashion designer Ghea Panggabean arranged as a dance performance by the famous choreographer, Martinus Miroto has jolted the fashion world in Milan in the midst of the Milan Fashion Week last Tuesday (28/9).

The haute couture show with a nuance from Java, Bali and Palembang accompanied by traditional and modern music and infused by the creative interpretation of the Baris and Ramayana dance from the two Indonesian maestros had amazed the audience, none of whom dared to blink their eyes for fear they might miss something. Long and standing ovations repeatedly broke the stillness at each pause of the show.

The Indonesian Embassy in Rome organized the show with a theme of “Reinventing Heritage” at the Melia Hotel in Milan in collaboration with Ghea Fashion Studio from Jakarta and the Indonesian Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The event was intended to break new ground for Indonesia’s high fashion into one of the world’s fashion centers and to encourage the flow of Italian tourists to Indonesia.

“Milan fashion world was not used to a modern fashion show intermingled with a traditional cultural performance and it became the show’s main attraction during the Milan Fashion Week”, remarked some of the visitors. The event was attended by at least 300 people from the fashion industry, boutique owners, fashion journalist, businesspersons and government officials.

After the show, a number of collectors and business executives from Milan’s fashion industry were expressing their interest to buy clothing and accessories designed by Ghea Fashion Studio in the show room and they expressed their wish to collaborate with Indonesia’s fashion industry.

“It might be a good idea to collaborate by opening a Ghea boutique in Milan”, observed Mohamad Oemar, the Indonesian Ambassador to Italy when he spoke with Italian business executives in the business meeting before the show.
The business forum was attended by more than 150 business executives from the fashion world, business executives and investors from Milan and the region of Lombardia.

Ghea Panggabean who has been engaging in the fashion business for over 30 years expressed her delight at the warm welcome she received from the fashion world in Italy and hoped she would be able to cooperate with Milan's fashion community.

In his address, Ambassador Oemar said that the show in one of the world’s fashion center was intended to introduce the rich Indonesian tradition and heritage that characterized Indonesia’s high fashion and he hoped the show would boost Indonesia’s positive image in Italy and promoting economic and trade relations between the two nations specifically in fashion industry.

Similar fashion and cultural show was also held in Rome last Thursday in conjunction with the reception to commemorate the 65th Anniversary of Indonesia’s Independence at the Sheraton Hotel in Rome. (source: the Indonesian Embassy in Rome)
